What is a Life Coach?

As defined by nationalcoachacademy.com, a life coach is an individual who assists people in identifying and achieving their life goals. This can branch into a person’s business goals and career plans, relationship management, spiritual development, motivation, health, lifestyle and many others. Life coaches do not work like consultants, mentors, advisers and therapists. They cater specifically to the needs of the client, assisting him or her to realize and live their lives to the fullest. Life coaches draw knowledge from sociology and psychology, but they do not necessarily depend on them and limit their work on these fields. This makes life coaching one of the most flexible forms of professional coaching, yet very much attuned to the wishes of a person.

Life Coach Responsibilities

Life coaches are responsible for turning dreams into reality. This is done by techniques and methods that convert goals into tangible activities. The life coach is also responsible for motivating his or her client and monitoring how the client is carrying out the activities. Life coaches should be able to provide viable steps that answer his or her client’s questions regarding business, relationships, physical, spiritual and mental states. The coach should be able to channel negativity away from the client, empowering the client to be optimistic about life until he or she is able to meet goals without the help of the coach.

Life coaches should also provide an open communication line with his or her client. Sessions tailored to the schedule and preference of the client are also planned and carried out until the client becomes satisfied.

Professional Life Coaching

Coaching schools are now available for individuals who want to build a career in life coaching. Most life coaching schools are not affiliated with any long-standing university, but accredited schools should be certified by the International Coach Federation and similar bodies for applicants to have the best education possible. For those who have a hectic schedule, online courses are also available. International academies for coaching courses also offer life coaching programs for those who want a more holistic approach.

Each school follows its own model of education. This is why applicants should read about the school’s background and training models first before they choose which one to apply in. To screen these schools, personal research is highly encouraged. Contacting or talking to the school’s alumni can also help applicants understand the approach of the school. Get a hold of each school’s program and requirements for life coach courses, and compare them with each other. Before becoming a professional life coach, a person must finish the school’s accreditation program, render a certain number of hours in coaching experience and gather referrals.

Those who are interested in becoming a life coach should have a natural affinity for people. They should also be skilled in interpersonal relationships and communication. A background in human behavior is a big plus since life coaches devote half of their time trying to understand their clients and where they are coming from. Life coaches must also be great in managing time and people of different backgrounds.
